Meet The Board
Executive Director
Tracie Shepherd
Ever since I became a part of the Lewis & Clark Literacy Council, I’ve been in awe of the remarkable work they carry out. Each student cherishes the chance to learn, empowering themselves to enhance their lives and those of their families. The tutors, who are committed volunteers, are keen to contribute to their community and support others. It's a win-win situation for all!
Board Chair
Andree Anderburg
I can help makes the lives of our students easier by helping with programing and fundraising so that the literacy council can provide free materials and tutoring. Our board members are vibrant humans who care deeply about our community, and it is a privilege to work with these fine people.
It feels good to help our community realize that the person that lives next door to them is really our neighbor.
Member and Tutor
Andrea Pulido
When I retired and moved to Montana in 2017, I was looking for a way to support and contribute to the Helena community and a way to get to know the people here better. My passion has always been teaching, specifically English learners and those with learning challenges, so when I heard about the literacy Council, it sounded perfect for me. I started out as a tutor and shortly after became a board member because I strongly believe in the work the LCLC does.
Member, Tutor, and Book Pal
Kathe Simons
As a young child, books and writing were my escape! As an adult, I worked for nearly 4 decades as a teacher and teacher-trainer in the area of literacy. I always tried to find time to work with adults who were struggling readers and writers through programs at the public library and the state women's prison.
Secretary and Tutor
Beth Steele
My passion for literacy began with my love of reading, a graduate degree in Adult Education, and empathy for people lacking the basic skills necessary to fully navigate our complex society. I recognize the challenges of learning to understand, speak, read and write English, and appreciate the motivation it takes for an adult to ask the Literacy Council for help.
Treasurer
Susan Nimick
When I became an elementary school teacher, I found myself drawn to working with the students who struggled in the classroom. I decided to further my education in teaching students with learning disabilities and ended up teaching struggling learners for over 30 years. I realized how much they gained from individualized support, strategies, and materials that helped them develop their academic skills. Watching my students progress and build their confidence in being able to learn made me an advocate for helping people achieve the literacy skills they need for success.
